A Fear of Visibility.
A video is now, apparently, an integral part of a web site; in order to get people to give a site more than just a cursory glance. For me this is a worrying trend; because I believe that I have a great face for radio. A number of people have encouraged me to ‘do’ a video because, so they say, people have to realise that working with me to create success “is fun, entertaining and enlightening”. So, with magic in mind, I took some time out on Wednesday and started talking to a camera. The end result was not what I expected.
I had seen Maria Andros (self named “Video Marketing Queen”) explain the sections of a video: curiosity; credibility, explaining what’s in it for the audience; exposing the problems people experience; educating the viewer with information about the service or product; and a call to action. So I created a mind map for each section, stuck one to the front of the camera, and “On with the show!”
It was so much more difficult than I thought. I made it worse for myself by using ‘sleight of hand magic’ to create metaphors to support my message. In the end I had to remember the phrase “done is better than perfect” – I was trying to perfect the ‘coin change routine’ when my family came home and the ‘studio’ had to be converted back into a living room. I then had to battle with the technology; camera to PC, editing, publishing, incompatible formats and uploading difficulties.
The end result was something that I hated. I didn’t like the way I looked, the way I spoke, the fact I seemed so miserable. There was nothing I liked about it at all. That made me really laugh out loud. The whole point of my message was that over thinking, and stacking meaning upon meaning, is a route to unhappiness, confusion and “failure”.
As long as a person can realise that their world is created by thinking; then it is possible for the world to be an incredibly happy, fulfilling and enjoyable place.
If you are feeling frightened and there is danger nearby; then that is a perfect reaction. If you are feeling bad – and there is no threat to your physical safety; then that is you body telling you that you need to allow your mind to slow, or quieten, down and let your innate inner wisdom guide you to contentment.
