We are born with a genetic fear of loud noises.
So we get frightened when adults shout at us to keep us safe. Especially if we then notice that everyone is looking at us.
The feeling of fear is our conscious awareness of the chemical changes in our body that are required to freeze, run or defend ourselves (fight or flight).
That feeling also acts as a warning to us that we are getting into an “uncomfortable situation” or that we are “thinking ourselves” into being frightened.
The problem is when we can’t tell the difference. Feeling uneasy about walking through a park late at night is a good thing. Feeling frightened about making a speech at a wedding, in front of friends and family that are all on your side, is not so useful.
It is the same evolutional system in use but in the process of keeping us safe it sometimes stops us from taking chance that could create success.
We all have plenty of memories of feeling bad, that we go over time and time again, so we avoid getting into action in case we get those feelings again.
We take “the past” project it into the future and live today as if were true. Our interpretations of what we are capable of and who we think we are has usually been shaped by the interpretations of a small child!
So by letting go of those thoughts of the fears from the past and creating a possibility for our future we can live today with excitement and joy.
